Annika Sorenstam - First Lady of Golf

Annika Sorenstam, the most successful female golfers ever, born October 9, 1970 in Upplands-Bro Municipality outside Stockholm, Sweden.

Young Annika Sorenstam and her elder sister Charlotta were talented tennis players and once Annika was ranked 12, Charlotta was 10 among Sweden's junior tennis players.

Annika Sorenstam did not get a chance to play golf until she was 12. Annika's family moved to London, when her father Tom was transferred by his employer IBM.

When 16, Annika improved her amateur rankings, but frustrated with tennis as her opponents were exploiting her week backhand and inconsistency in hitting winners. Her parents were disappointed when Annika decided to hang her racquet.

However, Annika's parents Tom and Gunilla persuaded her to take up golf as they themselves passionate about the game golf. Annika attended Stockholm's top instructor Henri Reis and soon golf became her passion.

Pia Nilsson, director of the women's program for the Swedish Golf Federation, also known as Sweden's 'first lady of golf', helped Annika Sorenstam to improve her game.

Annika Sorenstam watched Sweden's Liselotte Neumann winning US Open and motivated to achieve the same feat herself someday. That inspiration accelerated Annika's progress dramatically.

Luckily, Nilsson helped Annika to get an offer from University of Arizona, since Sweden's Universities had no golf teams. 19 year old Annika Sorenstam moved to Tuscon, United States.

Annika Sorenstam felt at home in Arizona, as she was fluent in English since her three years stay in England.

At University of Arizona, Annika Sorenstam led the Wildcats to the NCAA championship and named an All-American 1991. Next year as a sophomore, she was an All-American again and had seven collegiate titles in total. Also she took 92 World Amateur Team Championship in Vancouver. Though Annika's childhood dream of winning US Open haven't materialized when she finished 24 strokes behind Patty Sheehan, the champion in 92 US Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, playing in her dream event convinced her to start the pro career.

Annika Sorenstom has won 67 official tournaments till date. Nine LPGA Major vistories included, she has won atleast five tournaments every year from 2000 to 2005.
